“I just want to go down the street and buy some potpourri,” Emma argued.

“Nope, sorry,” David responded. “You can’t go anywhere.”

“The hell you say,” she snapped back. “I have to buy some potpourri and that’s that!”

David quickly moved to the door and blocked the exit with his body. “I’m real sorry, Emma, but Gary left very strict instructions.” He smiled tentatively at her, and Emma knew she was just yelling at the messenger.

“Oh, all right then,” Emma said resignedly, turning back toward his desk and dropping her handbag on the countertop. “Tell you what though,” she said quietly, “I’d love a cup of tea. How about it? I’ll just go make up the massage table, ready for use.”

“Sure, boss. No probs.”

David went to the tea room and when he returned, found the clinic empty. “Damn! Gazz is gonna kill me!”

David picked up the phone with no doubts about the reception he would receive.

“What?” Gary yelled down the mobile. “Christ, David! Where’s she gone?” He covered the mouthpiece and spoke aside to Clay. “Emma’s taken off. To get some pot something or another.” He lifted his hand, and spoke once more to David. “Well, I dunno. What is this stuff? Flowers? Kind of, huh? Hmmm, hang on, I’ll ask Clay.” Gary covered the mouthpiece again. “Clay, do you know something called pot something or other. It’s apparently flowers or something?”

“Nuh, but maybe Pru or Naomi would know. Sounds like a girl thing to me.”

“David, I’ll call you back on your mobile. You start looking. Where? Hell, I dunno. Just go downtown.” He rolled his eyes at Clay. “What about Jake? Did you call him?” He paused momentarily waiting for an answer. “She what? Great pair you turned out to be. Yeah sure, see ya.”

Gary quickly dialed Naomi’s number. “Naomi, I need some urgent advice.” He felt such a goose ringing asking Naomi for girly information. “I, er, need to buy some pot something or other that, er, Emma wants, but I, er, don’t know where to get it.” There, that wasn’t so bad. “Really? Anywhere else, er, in case they don’t have it?” Brilliant Bedford! “No? Great, thanks. Yeah, must go. Bye.”

They were heading for the front door before the call was even started. “Place called ‘Natural Wonders’ Naomi says, it’s in Nicholson Street, next to the supermarket. It’s the only place in town you can buy it, she said. Stuff’s called ‘potpourri’ and it’s some sort of smelly dried flowers.”

“So, why would she take off for dried flowers?”

“Beats me. Here.” He threw the car keys at Clay. “You drive. I’m too damned angry to get behind the wheel.”

As they drove along the bumpy road, the silence could have turned water to ice.

“What was that about Jake?” Clay asked, glancing across at Gary.

“Emma spotted him,” Gary bit out.

“Oh great, just great. Two professionals, one soppy female and they both bomb out.”

“What a bloody mess.” Gary ran his fingers along his unshaven chin.

“You’re just gonna have to tell her, Bro.” Clay looked across at Gary, waiting for his explosive reaction.
